Substance abuse is a problem throughout the world. In the U.S. alone there are more than 50 million binge drinkers, 17 million illegal drug users, and nearly 15 million people who abuse prescription medications. Although an employee’s private life is their own business, if their work is effected by drug or alcohol use they put themselves and their coworkers in danger. This health and safety training video explains the responsibilities of supervisors and managers who must deal with substance abuse in the workplace.
According to OSHA’s General Duty Clause, employers are required to maintain working environments “...which are free from recognized hazards that are causing or are likely to cause death or serious harm...” The Department of Labor and Department of Transportation are among the federal and state agencies with laws and regulations concerning substance abuse. For example, truck drivers, mechanics and dispatchers are subject to the Department of Transportation’s Procedures for Workplace Drug and Alcohol Testing Programs (Rule 49 CFR Part 40), which requires employees undergo random drug and alcohol testing. This course illustrates the steps managers and supervisors must take when dealing with workers who may be substance abusers.
Substance abuse is a serious problem. Watch this training course to learn how to keep your workplace safe.
